Oil and gas component machining in Malaysia — from PETRONAS supply chain contractors to subsea equipment fabricators and wellhead component manufacturers — involves some of the most difficult-to-cut materials in all of manufacturing. A 60 kg Inconel 718 valve body or a Super Duplex manifold flange represents significant material cost. Tooling failure on these components is not just a tool cost — it is a workpiece cost.

Inconel machining — grade selection matters
Inconel is not one material. The two most common grades in Malaysian O&G manufacturing have meaningfully different machinability:
Inconel 718 (solution annealed, 36–40 HRC) — the more machinable of the two. Recommended: Mitsubishi Materials MC7000 series CVD-coated carbide inserts for turning. Vc: 35–50 m/min, fz: 0.08–0.15mm. Positive rake chipbreaker geometry for manageable cutting forces. Work hardening is still a concern — never dwell the tool or allow rubbing.
Inconel 625 (annealed) — higher work hardening rate than 718, more abrasive. Vc: 25–40 m/min. Requires sharper positive rake geometry and AlTiN or AlCrN coating. Expect shorter tool life than 718 at equivalent parameters. For milling: reduce Vc by 20–30% versus turning parameters.
Both grades — use high-pressure through-spindle coolant (minimum 70 bar). Coolant must reach the cutting edge directly. Insufficient coolant is the leading cause of Inconel tool failure in Malaysian shops.
Duplex and Super Duplex stainless steel
Duplex (SAF 2205, UNS S31803) — two-phase microstructure causes alternating hard and soft cutting resistance. Use positive rake geometry, Vc: 80–120 m/min for turning, fz: 0.10–0.18mm. AlTiN-coated inserts.
Super Duplex (SAF 2507, UNS S32750) — higher alloy content, more abrasive, lower Vc. Vc: 60–90 m/min. Requires sharper edges and more frequent insert indexing than standard duplex.
Both grades — work hardening is aggressive on light cuts. Always maintain positive chip load — do not reduce feed to improve finish. Reduce Vc instead if tool life is insufficient.
Subsea connector and fitting threads — OSG API threading taps and dies, or Mitsubishi Materials indexable threading inserts for external API threads on large-diameter fittings.
17-4PH, H900 condition
H900 condition (44–47 HRC) — behaves similarly to hardened tool steel. Use AlTiN-coated carbide end mills, Vc: 60–90 m/min, positive rake, sharp edge.
Delamination of PH coating on component surface is a scrap risk — ensure tool is sharp and cutting forces are managed. Never climb mill on a worn tool.
NACE MR0175 and H2S service manufacturing
For components manufactured for sour service (H2S environment) per NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156:
The standard governs the metallurgy of the component — not the tooling itself. However, cutting fluid selection matters: avoid chlorinated or sulphur-active cutting fluids on stainless steel and nickel alloy components for sour service.
Use water-soluble or synthetic cutting fluids rated compatible with NACE-grade alloys.
