Rohm Precision Workholding — Why Your Cutting Tool Is Only as Good as How You Hold It
You have invested in premium MOLDINO or Mitsubishi Materials solid carbide end mills. You have the right cutting parameters dialled in. But your surface finish is inconsistent, your tool life is shorter than expected, and you cannot figure out why.
In many cases, the answer is not the tool. It is the toolholder.
Toolholder runout — the deviation of the tool's cutting edge from the true axis of rotation — is one of the most underestimated factors in CNC machining performance. Even a runout of 0.01mm (10 microns) at the tool tip causes measurable degradation in surface finish, tool life, and dimensional accuracy. For mold making and precision machining, runout of 10 microns is the difference between acceptable and scrap.
Understanding runout and its effects
When a tool runs with runout, one cutting edge takes a heavier chip than the others on every revolution. This means:
Uneven chip load — one flute takes 2x or 3x the chip load of the others. That flute wears faster, causing the tool to fail unevenly and prematurely.
Poor surface finish — the tool effectively traces an oval rather than a true circle. Each revolution leaves a slightly different mark, creating a rough, inconsistent finish.
Vibration and chatter — uneven chip load creates harmonic vibration that further degrades surface quality and accelerates tool wear.
Dimensional inaccuracy — the effective cutting diameter of a tool with runout is larger than the nominal diameter, causing oversized bores and features.
Micro-chipping — the shock loading on the dominant cutting edge causes micro-chipping of the carbide substrate, reducing tool life even before visible wear occurs.
The runout test — how to measure yours
To measure toolholder runout in your machine:
Insert a precision test bar (or a new solid carbide end mill) into the holder and clamp at normal torque.
Position a dial test indicator (DTI) or electronic gauge at the tool tip — at the furthest point from the holder nose.
Rotate the spindle slowly by hand (spindle off) and observe the indicator reading.
Record the total indicator reading (TIR) — this is your runout at tool tip.
Repeat at 2D and 3D from the holder nose to identify whether runout originates from the holder or the spindle taper.
Acceptable runout thresholds by application:
General milling (steel, aluminium) — TIR ≤ 0.010mm (10 microns) acceptable.
Finishing operations and mold machining — TIR ≤ 0.005mm (5 microns) required.
Micro-machining below 3mm diameter — TIR ≤ 0.002mm (2 microns) required. At 2mm tool diameter, 10 microns of runout is 0.5% of diameter — enormous.
High-speed machining above 15,000 RPM — TIR ≤ 0.003mm required. Runout at high speed creates imbalance that damages spindle bearings.
Toolholder comparison — runout performance
Weldon flat (side-lock) holders — the most common holder type in Malaysian machine shops. Runout: typically 0.015–0.050mm or worse at tool tip. The side screw that drives the Weldon flat introduces an off-axis clamping force that causes significant runout. Suitable only for heavy roughing where runout is acceptable. Never use for finishing, precision milling, or small diameters.
ER collet chucks (standard collets) — Runout: 0.005–0.015mm at tool tip. Significantly better than Weldon for standard milling. The limitation is collet quality — cheap ER collets introduce their own runout. Use precision ER collets (not standard collets) for better performance.
ER collet chucks (precision collets, e.g. ER-A or ER-UP grade) — Runout: 0.003–0.008mm. A substantial improvement over standard collets at modest additional cost. Recommended for semi-finishing and precision milling applications.
Rohm hydraulic expansion chucks — Runout: ≤ 0.003mm (3 microns) guaranteed. Hydraulic clamping applies equal radial force around the full circumference of the tool shank — no off-axis force, no runout variation. The benchmark for precision milling, finishing, and high-speed machining.
Shrink-fit holders — Runout: ≤ 0.003mm. Comparable to hydraulic chucks. Requires a dedicated induction heating unit for tool changes — higher setup cost than hydraulic chucks.
Rohm precision toolholding — what we supply
KS Precision Tools is an authorised distributor for Rohm workholding in Malaysia. Key products for CNC machining centres:
Rohm KFD-N hydraulic expansion chucks — the standard choice for precision milling and finishing. Runout ≤ 0.003mm. Available in BT30, BT40, BT50, HSK-A63, and HSK-A100 interfaces. Shank diameter range 3mm–32mm.
Rohm TENDO hydraulic chucks — ultra-precision series for high-speed machining and micro-milling. Runout ≤ 0.001mm (1 micron). Suitable for spindle speeds up to 50,000 RPM.
Rohm SPZF-E power chucks for CNC turning — high gripping force at elevated spindle speeds for turning centres. Maintains gripping force above 3,000 RPM where pneumatic chucks lose grip.
Rohm KZF precision collet chucks with ER-A grade precision collets — the cost-effective step up from standard ER chucks. Runout ≤ 0.005mm. Recommended for general precision milling where hydraulic chuck cost is not justified.
The return on investment from precision workholding
Precision toolholders are a one-time capital cost that pays back through extended tool life and reduced scrap. A simple example:
Current situation: Weldon flat holder, runout 0.030mm. Tool life: 150 parts per MOLDINO finishing end mill (RM 180 each). Cost per part in tooling: RM 1.20.
After switching to Rohm hydraulic chuck (RM 850 one-time cost): Runout 0.003mm. Tool life increases to 420 parts per end mill. Cost per part in tooling: RM 0.43.
Tool cost saving per 1,000 parts: RM 770. Rohm chuck pays back in under 1,100 parts — at 500 parts per month, that is under 3 months payback.
Surface finish improvement and scrap reduction are additional savings not included in this calculation.
