CNC Tooling for Mold & Die Manufacturing Malaysia — Process & Procurement Guide 2026

In mold and die manufacturing, a worn end mill does not just produce a bad part — it ruins a cavity that took 30–50 hours to machine, costing far more in rework than the price of the tool that caused it. The economics of mold machining demand premium tooling, correctly specified and supported by a supplier who has actually been on a mold shop floor.

Strategy 1 — pre-hardened mold steel machining (28–40 HRC)

P20 (28–33 HRC), NAK80 (38–42 HRC), and 718H are the most common pre-hardened mold steels. These are machinable with standard coated carbide but require the right geometry:

  • Roughing — MOLDINO MRBSH or Mitsubishi Materials iMX exchangeable head system. High-feed or trochoidal milling for maximum material removal. Vc: 120–180 m/min, fz: 0.04–0.08mm.

  • Semi-finishing — MOLDINO MRBSH or EPDBE ball nose. Step-over 30–40% of tool diameter. Vc: 150–200 m/min.

  • Finishing — MOLDINO EPDB or EPDBE series. Vc: 180–250 m/min, fz: 0.01–0.03mm. Surface finish Ra 0.4 achievable before hand polishing.

Strategy 2 — hard milling (48–62 HRC)

H13 (48–52 HRC), 1.2379/D2 (58–62 HRC), and S136 (hardened) require a completely different approach. This is where MOLDINO's advantage is most clear:

  • Hard roughing — MOLDINO Impact Miracle series (VFMHV). AlTiN nano-composite coating rated to 1100°C. Vc: 80–120 m/min on H13 at 50 HRC. Dry machining or MQL — flood coolant causes thermal shock on hardened steel.

  • Hard semi-finishing — MOLDINO EPDBE or Impact Miracle ball nose. Vc: 100–150 m/min, fz: 0.008–0.015mm.

  • Hard finishing — MOLDINO EPDB series. Vc: 150–200 m/min, fz: 0.004–0.008mm. Achieves Ra 0.2 or better, reducing polishing time significantly.

  • Fine detail and ribs below 1mm — MOLDINO small diameter series, solid carbide, ≤2 micron runout. High-speed spindle (20,000+ RPM) required.

Runout and toolholding — the hidden factor

Tool runout is the leading cause of poor surface finish in mold machining — more than cutting speed or feed rate errors. All MOLDINO finishing end mills in our stock are supplied with runout ≤3 micron (h5 shank tolerance). For toolholding, we recommend:

  • Shrink-fit or hydraulic chuck for finishing operations — runout contribution from holder must be <1 micron.

  • ER collet chuck for roughing and semi-finishing — use ER precision collets (not standard collets) for runout ≤5 micron.

  • Never use Weldon flat (side-lock) holders for ball nose end mills — introduces runout that destroys surface finish.
