CNC Tooling for Medical Device Manufacturing Malaysia — Process & Procurement Guide 2026

Medical device manufacturing tolerates no ambiguity — not in part geometry, not in surface finish, not in your supply chain documentation. A tooling supplier for this sector must understand the difference between Grade 2 and Grade 5 titanium, know why coolant pressure matters for cobalt chrome, and be able to provide the documentation your ISO 13485 procurement process requires.

Titanium machining — grade matters

Titanium is not one material. The two most common grades in medical manufacturing require different tooling strategies:

  • Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) — used for load-bearing orthopaedic implants (hip stems, knee tibial plates, pedicle screws). High strength, poor thermal conductivity. Requires: sharp cutting edge (honed, not T-land), AlCrN or uncoated submicron carbide, high-pressure coolant (70 bar minimum through spindle), Vc: 40–60 m/min, fz: 0.02–0.05mm. Built-up edge is the primary failure mode — increase Vc before reducing feed.

  • Grade 2 CP Titanium — used for non-load-bearing implant shells, dental abutments, and surgical instrument handles. More machinable than Grade 5. Vc: 60–90 m/min with uncoated or TiN-coated carbide. Lower cutting forces — tool deflection on thin-wall features is the primary concern.

Cobalt chrome machining (Co-Cr-Mo)

Cobalt chrome is among the most difficult materials in medical machining — high work hardening rate, abrasive, and generates extreme heat at the cutting edge. Key requirements:

  • Use positive rake, sharp-edge geometry with AlCrN or AlTiSiN coating.

  • High-pressure through-spindle coolant (minimum 70 bar) is non-negotiable — without it, tool life collapses within minutes.

  • Vc: 25–45 m/min for end milling. Lower than titanium — cobalt chrome is harder to cut.

  • MOLDINO precision end mills or Mitsubishi Materials solid carbide grades are proven in Co-Cr-Mo — ask our team for the specific grade recommendation for your component.

316L stainless steel surgical instruments

  • Use sharp, positive rake end mills and drills — 316L work-hardens rapidly if the tool rubs rather than cuts.

  • OSG EX-SUS series drills are specifically optimised for surgical-grade stainless — excellent chip control and point geometry for clean entry and exit.

  • For tapping: use spiral flute taps with appropriate pitch for through-holes, spiral point for blind holes. Never use cutting fluid with chlorine content — causes stress corrosion cracking in 316L.
